What do I need a combination wrench for?

Combination wrenches belong to the category of wrenches and are particularly practical as they consist of a combination of an open-end and a box-end wrench. They are used to loosen or tighten nuts and bolts with specific screw heads.

Open-end wrenches, also known as spanners, are among the most common wrenches and can be used for square or hexagonal bolts. Box-end wrenches, as the name suggests, have a ring-shaped profile that grips hexagonal or bi-hexagonal bolts and nuts.

Wrenches are indispensable for tradespeople in many fields. They are always used when bolts and nuts need to be loosened or tightened. Therefore, there are different wrench sizes for different bolts, which are indicated on the wrench. Combination wrenches are particularly used when working on bicycles, cars, motorcycles, and other machinery.

What is a ratchet wrench?

A ratchet wrench is essentially a box-end wrench whose box end can be rotated in one direction and locked in the other via a freewheel, also known as a ratchet. This allows you to place the ratchet wrench on a screw and gradually loosen or tighten it without having to remove the wrench again. This is particularly practical when screws are difficult to access: in such cases, the ratchet wrench is an absolute secret weapon. That's why it should be part of every DIY mechanic's basic toolkit. In a broader sense, ratchets with sockets also belong to the wrench family. The combination of the ratchet with a wide variety of sockets makes its enormous versatility its strength. However, compared to a conventional ratchet wrench, the ratchet is not as suitable for use in confined spaces.

What do I need to consider when buying combination wrenches, ratchet wrenches, and sockets?

Which combination or ratchet wrench is the right one? That depends on the purpose. For loosening or tightening standard screws, a ratchet wrench of the correct size is sufficient. To cover the most common wrench sizes, you should have sizes from 6 to 19 mm at home or in your workshop. With these increments in 1 mm steps, most common screws can be tackled.
